Understanding Assessment Information
Schools use a range of assessment terms when reporting pupil outcomes. The guide below explains what these terms mean in a simple and parent-friendly way.
Assessment Terms Explained
Early Years and Phonics
- EYFS – Early Years Foundation Stage, the curriculum followed by children in Reception.
- GLD – Good Level of Development. The percentage of Reception children who achieved the expected level in key areas of learning, including literacy and mathematics.
- Phonics Screening Check – A national assessment taken in Year 1 to assess children's ability to read and decode words using phonics.
Attainment Measures
- EXS – Expected Standard. A pupil has achieved the level expected for their age group.
- EXS+ – Expected Standard and Above. A pupil has met or exceeded the expected standard.
- GDS – Greater Depth Standard. A pupil is working beyond the expected standard for their age.
- RWM – Reading, Writing and Mathematics combined. The percentage of pupils who achieved the expected standard in all three subjects.
Key Stage Assessments
- SPAG / GPS – Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. This is assessed through the national Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test in Key Stage 2.
- MTC – Multiplication Tables Check. A national assessment taken in Year 4 to check knowledge of times tables up to 12 × 12.
- Scaled Score – Key Stage 2 test results are converted into scaled scores. A score of 100 represents the expected standard, with 120 being the highest possible score.
Understanding the Data
- National Average (NA) – The average result achieved by pupils across England, allowing schools to compare outcomes nationally.
- Internal Data – Teacher assessment information used by the school to monitor pupil progress. This may not form part of national assessment outcomes.
Please note: Percentages are based on the number of pupils in the relevant year group. In smaller cohorts, the performance of one or two pupils can have a noticeable impact on the overall percentage.
Performance Comparison
