DT
Curriculum Rationale
Design & Technology at primary level equips children with the creativity, practical skills, and problem-solving mindset needed to understand and shape the made world around them. Through engaging, hands-on projects, pupils learn to design, make, and evaluate purposeful products, developing resilience, curiosity, and critical thinking. DT encourages children to work both independently and collaboratively, applying knowledge from across the curriculum—including maths, science, art, and computing—to real-world challenges.
Our curriculum builds progressively from EYFS to Year 6, ensuring pupils master essential skills such as generating ideas, using tools safely, choosing appropriate materials, and reviewing their outcomes thoughtfully. Food technology provides children with the knowledge to make healthy, informed choices, while mechanisms, structures, textiles, and electrical systems introduce them to fundamental engineering principles.
By fostering innovation, resourcefulness, and practical competence, our DT curriculum prepares pupils to become confident, capable creators who can design solutions that have purpose and impact in their world.
